Météorite# 1337 : Lovina

Voici un objet connu qui reste un sujet de grande interrogation.
Est-ce la même chose sur notre forum ?

Désolé, j’ignorais. Mais comme dit la fable, rira bien qui rira le dernier… C’est finalement une longue histoire.

Quelqu'un sait si les chercheurs continuent l'étude de Lovina pour mesurer les rapports isotopiques de l'oxygène?
Aussi, la datation a-t-elle était faite?

Le suspens n’aura pas été long. Lors de sa découverte sur une plage enchanteresse, j’ai toujours fermement douté de cette origine céleste de Lovina, jadis présentée comme ataxite.
Habitué de la cristallographie, cela me choquait que de telles croissances squelettiques puissent s’épanouir (fleurir) dans l’espace confiné des astéroïdes. Zelimir Gabelica et John Kashuba, ces amis avec qui on en discutait, peuvent l’attester. Puis des sommités scientifiques acceptèrent le statut de météorite pour Lovina, dûment argumenté.
Penaud, je battais ma coulpe devant ce fait, jusqu’au jour où, avec la plus grande honnêteté, Darryl Pitt fit amende honorable. Lovina n’est plus une météorite.

I just received a preliminary abstract on Lovina from Kuni Nishiizumi of UC Berkeley's Space Sciences Laboratory. Kuni, the abstract's lead author, concluded it is unlikely Lovina is a meteorite. The markers analyzed were beryllium and chlorine concentrations and the paucity of cosmogenic radionuclides (only Gibeon and Nantan show less). One more round of tests will occur and further conclusions will be drawn from the same. The abstract entitled "Lovina: is this a Meteorite?" will appear in the MAPS volume associated with the 74th Annual Meteoritical Society Meeting this coming August.

It has been suggested by some diehards that the bubbling evident in the Lovina mass could have been the result of smelting, and that the lack of cosmogenic radiation could be explained by Lovina having been near the center of a much larger mass---as we know Lovina originated from at least a somewhat larger mass for the ziggurat structures to have formed. However, in the spirit of embracing the most likely of explanations, it seems compelling to conclude that the most likely explanation for an expanding host of anomalies is Lovina's terrestrial origin.

Accordingly, I've decided to no longer offer Lovina as a meteorite and have asked my webmaster to take down references to the same on Macovich.com at her earliest possible convenience.

Voilà une "grosse" nouvelle... la plus wrong-like des vraies qui devient une vraie wrong. Il la retire de la vente en tant que météorite ? Quelle générosité... je me demande combiende personnes en ont acheté, pour quelles sommes ? Faut dire que si c'était une vraie, c'est tentant une chose aussi bizarroïde ! Ce qui est fort quand même, c'est que pour analyser "météorite" quelque chose qui y ressemble aussi peu, il fallait des garanties exceptionnelles et tous les recoupements possibles. Et pourtantelle s'est bien retrouvé "officielle" !

Même avec des doutes affichés APRES l'officialisation, on a reconclu qu'il
s'agissait bien d'une météorite.

In December 2009, two meteorite researchers wondered if Lovina - certified by
scientists as a meteorite in 2008 - might not be a meteorite after all, but
instead be a highly exotic form of oxidized slag. Further research into Lovina's
origins immediately commenced, but the results were not available prior to our
January sale, and so the specimen was pulled from the offering. This past
February, the world's foremost expert in iron meteorites, Dr. John Wasson,
announced the results of his new research. "I am convinced Lovina is a
meteorite; every single element is within the range commonly encountered in iron
meteorites. Metals that have been made by man will always differ from
meteorites in terms of several elements and element ratios." Dr. Wasson's
findings were endorsed by the scientists who prompted the new investigation, and
Wasson's determination reaffirmed Lovina's standing as a singularly unique
meteorite. Months later Wasson stated he was still puzzled by the object which
