HUNT IS ON!
This event was a PROBABLE meteorite fall that occurred at 12:07:56 PM local time on 02 Dec 2020, or 17:07:56 UTC. Events are recorded as "probable" if they produce well-defined signatures of a meteorite fall in weather radar imagery at the time and place described by eyewitnesses but no meteorites have been recovered from the event to date. The fireball was a bright daytime fireball and 181 eyewitnesses reported it to the American Meteor Society across Ontario, New York, Michigan, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. The location of eyewitnesses was strongly influenced by cloud cover. Ten eyewitnesses reported hearing sonic booms from the passing fireball.

On Wednesday, December 2nd, at 12:08pm, a daytime fireball was seen in the sky over upstate New York. It was caught on video and it was determined that it was traveling from the North East to South West. Doppler radar put the projected strewn field over Scipioville in upstate New York. On Thursday afternoon, my partner and I packed our bags and made the 5 hour drive to the finger lakes. We picked up another hunter who flew into Syracuse to hunt the suspected falls. We got a couple of rooms at the Days Inn in Auburn and started planning the hunt. At sunrise, we drove to Scipioville, directly under the Doppler returns. We tried getting permission from the land owners to search their farm land, but it was difficult to find the owners, and the owners that we found would not let us on their land. Hunting season is in full swing and many of the land owners have rented out their land to the deer hunters. We were, however, able to walk the roads directly under the Doppler returns. We were also able to leave contact information with a few of the farmers, encouraging them to call or message us if they find anything interesting in their fields. The land was great for hunting. Flat land, plowed fields. That day, we also got to meet up with Michael Kelly and Brett Joseph. Together, we hunted a cemetery in Aurora Village. On the second day, we decided to search the larger end of the projected strewn field. At sunrise we drove to Romulus on the western bank of Cayuga Lake. Romulus has a number of vineyards that were perfect for hunting. We spent the day in the vineyards searching with no luck. The weather was cold and there was a pretty consistent wintery mix falling off and on all day. When we finished hunting, we took a break to do a wine tasting at one of the vineyards that gave us permission to search their land. We also came across a man who was walking his two dogs. We asked him if he owned any land in the strewn field and after talking to him for a short time, we learned that he was a reporter out of Ithaca, NY. He agreed to let us search his land if we’d agree to do an interview. That evening we met up with Raymond Bourges and Ily Valenzuela, who had driven up from Tennessee to hunt the suspected fall. They had rented a really nice Airbnb in the strewn field. That night, it snowed. The following morning, we got a slightly later start to the day. The plan was to go door to door dropping off contact information and talking to farmers in Scipioville. The fields were completely covered in snow and ice at this point. We decided to also check out Aurora Village, which was at the center of the projected strewn field. To our surprise, the village was perfect for hunting. The warmth from the lake prevented the snow and ice from sticking to the fields. We met up with a meteorite hunter from Michigan and started hunting the fields of Wells College. We also met with Raymond and Ily and talked mets for a while. I had to work the next day and the hunter we were with had a flight out of Syracuse in the morning, so we stopped hunting and headed back. Although we got skunked, I’m not convinced there aren’t rocks on the ground. I plan on heading back next year to see if I can get permission to hunt the fields underneath the Doppler returns and to see if anything’s been found by the locals
